A personal design philosophy

Dot point (monkey)The colour and materials used have a profound effect on the way we respond to a mosaic design. I love the way that the use of mosaics enables you to add splashes of colour to any décor - interior or exterior. I love how a piece can be permanent or portable; that it can be contemporary and funky or thousands of years old and still the epitome of classical design.

The mosaics I make can be as varied and flexible as the imagination. As regards choice of colour, texture, luminosity and material - and if that becomes boring I can change the position of a piece, or introduce a new medium and it becomes a new experience all over again, adapting to any mood or colour scheme. Mosaic truly is a unique medium and no two pieces will be exactly the same - ever.

The design of a piece is at once critical to the overall success of the piece and provides the key to my pleasure in the creation of a piece - it can be as simple or complex as my mood, or the commission, dictate.

The connection one feels to a mosaic piece is one of the things that for me makes the creation and enjoyment of a piece a thing to value. The tactile nature of mosaics, from the creative process to the ability to handle a piece in perpetuity provide mosaics with their own individual history, a way of connecting on an individual level with a piece.

For me, one of the key pleasures of working with china shards is knowing that the piece has had other lives and served other purposes, before I rework it for the future. Objects take on their own personality to the point that they dictate what they will become and which pieces will join them in this revitalised life.

The ability to breathe new life into a treasured item is one of the unique features of mosaic as an art form. The act of creation from an often times destructive process is what makes mosaic works unique. Mosaic really is limited only by your imagination.
